SpamBayes

So, after getting more and more daily spam in my main email inbox, I decided it was time to stop putting it off and get some kind of filtering software. After a few minutes of Googling around, I came across SpamBayes. It’s well reviewed, and works as an Outlook plugin, or under Linux (several options depending on how you’re retrieving your mail). Best part is — it’s free.
I have it running on Outlook and so far, so good. After initial setup, you “train” the software by telling it what emails are spam and which ones are ham (good). Once it’s schooled, it’s immediately around 90% effective in stopping junk mail (this is my guesstimate based on training the software with about 100 or so emails). As new undetected spams reach your inbox, just select em and click the “Delete As Spam” button. This junks the messages and further trains SpamBayes. The more training, the smarter it gets.
The commercial MS Outlook spam fighting software, InBoxer, is based directly on the SpamBayes code — check out the great reviews..
